Average cost for brake pad replacement?
 

Just wondering what the average cost for front brake pad replacement should be on a 92 400E (W124)? Also if anyone can recommend a place in the SF bay area? I got estimtes from two "Chain" places and they seem a bit too high wanted get a ball park figure.. maybe go to an indipendant.

Not much if you do it yourself.

Probably about $150 per axle for the pads only, add another $150 if they do rotors too. Dealer may be a little higher, independents a little less.

Take your pick on pads, & probably add $ 50.00 for labour. ;)

Less than 30 mins of your time and under $100 for pads if you do it yourself and order the pads from fastlane at the top of the page.

the trouble with
 

haveing your brakes done is the pros want to turn the rotors, pack the bearings and such. most unneccessary unless the rotors are warped and then they need replacing.

and then it is more like $400 and prob more if they replace the rotors... unless they decide you should have new calipers too. then maybe 7 or 800.

look at the diy article. it is really not hard. I can do the front and rear pads in my car in about an hour.

Cost - just the pads and a little bit of my time.

Pads range from like $40-$50.00 per set, up to over $100.00 per set depending ont he brand.

With a few tools, you can do the brakes yourself. just follow the directions exactly.

Shouldn't be a problem. My 17 year old had never changed brake pads (this was last year). I told him to do it. Handed him the pads. I watched. I think he got hung up in one area. No big deal.

If you have the DIY tutorial should be no problem.

I guess this was just meant for encouragement. Don't hand over your hard earned money for the easy stuff.

the first time
 

i changed disc brake pads i was a reluctant mechanic. i had done lots of drum brakes but the discs seemed very exotic and un predictable. well i had metal to metal on new years eve and needed to leave the next day to drive to texas (1k miles) and the repair shops had all started on the beer already and so i was left to do it myself.

well i jacked up the car took off the wheel and wowee jeez, it was so simple. i spent most of the time chuckling at how easy it was.

and now whenever i do them i chuckle all over again. my dad used to say it was about as hard as making a ham sandwich. i say it usually takes longer to jack up the car and remove the wheel as changing the pads.

of course things other than pads take a little longer.

Find a friend that know how to do brakes, this is not something you want to foul up, you life depends on it, Mercedes replaces rotors and does not turn them, if you turn them and get in a wreck your insurance company will not allow your claim, it is a simple job for someone with average mechanical ability, I also live in the Bay Area and all outside shops are expensive, I only take my car to people to do stuff I cannot do like A/C and transmissions. Just wandering, but why wouldnt they take your claim??? Its still a mechanical faliure no matter who did it, and in my eyes, they should still take it... BUT that being said, insurance companys are bloodsucking bastages who do nothing else then make money, no service, just money... but anyways...

So can you explain to this 15 year old why they would NOT take your claim for a wreck, caused by a mechanical faliure?

It's not an accurate statement - no real reason to know more.

My local MB dealer gave me an estimate of $380 for replacing just the pads and sensors on my '92 190E. As was mentioned earlier in this thread, you can do it yourself for less than $100.

My indy MB master mechanic charged me $135 for front brakes (pads, sensors & labor)

D.I.Y. was the way to go
 

Ok, just followed the D.I.Y. instructions and that was a piece of cake had the whole thing done in less than an hour, only cost me $80 for parts.. Thanks for the tips.
