Check Engine light on again

Hey Guys,

After replacing the cruise control/idle part in my E-320, it now seems to run great. No more ticking noise, nice acceleration and everything.

But the check engine light's on again. Can't seem to keep ahead of whatever's happening.

I'll take it to my mechanic next week to see what's up. I'm completely at a loss at this point. Tired of spending big bucks!

Ugh.

When was the last time the egr recirc line was cleaned. That model is easy enough to check the codes on using the built in LED emissions code reader.

Buy the parts from Radio Shack to build Arthur Dalton's code reader. Then post the codes. Alternately, if I recall correctly, we each reside in Fairfax, VA. I have the code reader and would gladly make it available to you. Let me know.
regards,
Mark

The reason for the reader suggestion is to see what the other modules are coupled up with the DM for diagnosis. The DM gets info from the other modules.

Thanks, guys,

I'm taking the car into my mechanic's early next week for an oil change and he'll check the code then. In the meantime, he suggested that I disconnect the battery and clear out the code again to see what happens.

The car's running otherwise fine.

<<<In the meantime, he suggested that I disconnect the battery and clear out the code again to see what happens.>>

I guess what we are all trying to figure out is why you don't just press the button to clear the code , or better yet , press it to get the code ..
You disconnect the battery and you lose all memory , including your radio code..

Kinda like pulling the motor to change the oil..

you mentioned that you changed your cruise control/idle. I assume that means throttle body actuator.
the computer on your car has to "code" the new actuator. this can be done at the dealer...or you can turn the key without starting the engine and let it sit for 90 seconds. the computer will communicate with the TBA. then start the engine.
let me know if it works for you.

How do I get plans for Arthur Dalton's code reader? I have a 92 500SL with the old style separate pin, square block diagnostic connection. Is this what I am looking for?

I'm with AD here Stefano. Just put the key in the right position and mash the button while watching the LED. Come back here with how many flashes you get. I would do exactly what tan man said to do first. If that does not resolve it then I would suspect the egr line is plugged which is more pia to resolve than anything else.

Private email and PMs are not the way to go.. just use the search feature or simply post the request..

It's been snowing here today, but I should be able to try that tomorrow. I'll post results. Thanks!

BTW, the car has been having trouble starting all day today. It takes a few times turning the key until it starts. Seems like a connection thing. It was doing that every now and then for the last few months, but today it's been pretty much every time I tried to start it.
