mystery leak
So, I was under the hood and noticed black, oily goo all over a small hose that is coming from what I believe is the PS pump. There are 2 lines and they go to the front of the car, I don't know if this is a vaccuum connection or what. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I don't know why there would be a pressurized ooze from the PS pump. It's where the hose meets the nipple at the front.

Are you talking about the lines that go to the power steering fluid cooler? There is a loop of piping that goes to the front of the car and loops around a little to disspipate heat from the power steering fluid.

Well, that would probably be it. I didn't think it had a cooler, but it does look like it goes to the radiator. So, yes, the line on top.

Sounds like you need to replace the flexible hose, probably between the pump and the cooler, on the low pressure side. My 210 needs one of these too.

Mine low-pressure PS hose was leaking also, and the seeping fluid was wicking down the length of the metal "fluid cooler" pipe that wraps around the front of the radiator, leaving it coated in black "goop" (combined fluid and road dust, etc.).
I had a little bit of seepage from the top end of the hose, but most of the mess turned out to be due to a loose clamp at the lower end (between the hose and the cooler pipe). You might try just tightening all of the clamps first. If you decide you need to replace the hose - either get some generic hydraulic hose at an autoparts store, or possibly get it online (most of the online places sell a 1m length for about $20). You can find the inside diameter spec. on-line. Whatever you do, don't pay $41 or so at the dealer for the same 1m length of hose |

I paid $18 for the hose, at a local MB dealer. It's a formed hose for my car, and I didn't want to use a generic flexible hose.
