This is such a wonderful board...it' has saved me hundreds...mayby thousands in MB repair. So with that in mind...does ANYONE know of a board like this for Chevrolet vehicles??? I"m having a problem with my 98 Chevy 454 Dually. Thanks!!!

I don't think there has been a computer made with enough memory or disk space to field all the tech help questions that would be fielded by the meriad of people experiencing problems with their Chevy's. It would fill up in a week.

It's WIERD!!! OK...in the morning, when it's cold (the motor) it fires right up...I mean instantaneously. If you drive it for a while, then cut it off, and start it right up again it starts immediately. But, if after you drive it, and let it sit for more than an hour, it wont start. I mean it turns and turns and turns but you have to hold the ignition for about 6-10 seconds before it will start. And when it does start, you can smell gas from the exhaust like it was flooded. It's odd. It will start when its been sitting over night, start when sitting 10 minutes, but not start if it's been sitting more than an hour. Now...thats wierd. I hate to take it to the dealer.

I've changed the starter, fuel filter, still does it. I'd change the pump but it's $400.00 and wouldn't mind if I know that'll do it.

Might be a dealer service item. Check the rest pressure from your fuel pump, possibly the pump is not holding the line pressure after engine is warmed and then shut off. Your morning starts are rich starts due to the cold start injector or other mechanisms enriching the mixture. Next check for injector leakdown after shutting off warm. What year is the truck/engine and is it throttle body, SEFI, or carb? I currently own a 98 Suburban.

As for the problem you are having, that sure is a wierd one. Most modern car troubleshooting starts with a code reader to see what computer codes are being thrown by the 'puter.

Hi there,
It sounds to me like you have an injector that's not seating properly, causing the fuel pressure load to drain off into the intake manifold. You can try running some cleaner thru the system, but if that doesn't work you should get it replaced, as it will cause premature wear on the affected cylinder walls!

Richard...

Is it possible the seals around some injectors could be destroyed...causing the problem you mentioned? I have run some BG injector cleaner through the gas tank, and maybe it was too strong for the rubber compound. Because when it does start theres a "flooded" smell coming from the exhaust. By the way...the truck is a 1998 1 ton dually 2wd, 454 motor. Thanks for your help guys. I know it's not a mercedes related problem...but this is what i drive when the 400E is resting!!!

Peter,

I had run some injector cleaner on my 92 Astro and it ate away at the injector O rings which caused flooding problems. I discoverd this by turning the key in the run position (this engages the fuel pump) while looking at the throttle body and noticed gas dripping out of the fuel injector (mine is a throttle body design). I replaced the O rings and has been fine since then. Lesson learned - don't put in any additives unless it is a last resort.

Did it ever occur to you that we Chevy owners spend all of our spare time fixing our Chevy's and don't have time to spend on the internet. Kidding aside my experience with cars (mainly GM and Honda) is that if you spend a little time doing preventive maintenance you will spend a lot of time with trouble free driving.

You are right on the money with that one. Trouble free driving doesn't mean that you never open the hood and the tool box, it just means that you're doing preventive maintenance not corrective maintenance. BTW I'm not totally down on Chevy's. I have an '88 stick shift Vette.

The seals at the injectors will not cause the trouble you describe, they will cause a rough idle due to a vacuum leak. The previous poster made a very good point about a bad injector. These injectors will stick, when they do, they're through, cleaning agents will not unstick them.

You need to first use a noid light at each injector to ensure that they are all getting a signal. Then you can find the offending injector by removing the injector connectors one at a time until you find the one that does not effect the idle, much like we did with plug wires before the days of electronic ignitions. I have done this before to find an injector that was stuck closed. I'm not sure this will find one that is sticking open when shut down.

Peter,

Don't forget to do an oil change after you correct the "leaky injector" due to the fact that any un-burnt fuel will end up in the crank case. I recommend that you check the oil level first. If the oil level increased (measured from the dipstick) then a good quantity of fuel ended up in your crank case in which case change the oil before running the engine.
