Headliner making a "thud" sound when driving over bumps
 

I have a 99 E300 and when driving over bumps or pavement separations in the road, I am getting "thud" noises coming from the headliner just behind where the sunroof shade slides all the way back. I could literally push or tap it up against the roof and the noise was identical to what I previously thought was coming from the rear shelf or trunk.

Now, the question is.... how do I fix it so that the headliner doesn't bang up against the roof when I drive over bumps or separations in the pavement?

What color is your car? I have a black '99 E300 and have asked that same question and was told that because the dark colors absorb so much heat the insulation melts and falls on top of the cables for the sunroof which is what could be making your noise too. The short answer is probably the cables for the sunroof because there is no insulation in the roof. Pound on the roof lightly and see if you get the hollow sound meaning no insulation.

Mine is brilliant silver. I called the dealer today and the service advisor stated that perhaps it has separated from the clip. He also stated that sometimes they use "double back" tape and works well.
