Confused about Transmission Switches

I recently posted a thread about my wifes 1996 SL500 dying mysteriously and marine was right on about the transmission switch. Now after driving the car I notice that when the shifter is moved into a gear, the indicator light may or may not light. If it does not light, the car wont start or engage the gear even if the shifter is in the correct position. If I jiggle the selector (in the car) it will make a light electric clicking sound (inside the center console) and the light (P or D or R) will go on and the car will function as normal. What is the switch in the console called? It isnt the same as a neutral safety switch is it? Thanks, Frank

Sounds as if you are describing a problem with the shifter quadrant. As far as I know it's sold as an assembly. They are known for being problematic but since it's a complex electronic catch all for anything spilled in the console, it can almost be considered a wear item

Well, that makes sense. I also noticed that now the window switch is sticking. which makes me wonder.....it sounds self inflicted.....Thanks.
