Routing Exhaust Fumes Outside of Shop
Anybody have any ideas for a readily available (hardware store or Home Depot perhaps) hose product that a home mechanic – like myself – can use in the garage to route exhaust fumes from the tailpipe to the outdoors?
I don’t need an airtight seal – I only want to be able to run a vehicle for a minute or two, without asphyxiating myself. I thought about aluminum dryer vent, but I can’t think of a way to reduce it to a size that would be close to that of a tailpipe. Any thoughts are appreciated. Jeff Pierce |
Go to a local garage and eye their vents. None of them have an airtight seal to the exhaust pipe. I would recommend a forced-fresh-air system in the heater, but even that is probably overkill.
Of course, while you're there, you could ask where they got theirs. I don't like the flexible dryer hoses for dryer vents, and wouldn't use one of these for car exhaust. |
One of my mechanics has what looks like an oversized shop vac hose (probably a specialty item) and a round hole in the garage door with a cover plate... hooked up from tailpipe to outdoors... works well.

Exhaust Fumes
Search on Garage Exhaust Hose at www.mcmaster.com they have a listing for the hose and fittings for just this application. An 11 foot section of 2" is about $55. The fittings run $20 to $50 each.
