I have the same problem with my 126. The worst is going straight into the wind and keeping the economy in the red because of the force of wind.

A comparison
My wife has a 1985 Peugeot 505 and I had a 1985 Peugeot 505. Same car, same year, same tires. Mine sat about an inch lower and had slightly stiffer shocks and there was a big difference in how the cars handeled in crosswinds, among other things.
And then there was the time I was following her home, she was driving my car and I was driving a VW bug. I was getting blown out of my lane and she didn't feel a thing. My gage of wind stability is how the car feels when a 18 wheeler comes by on a two lane road. Now thats scarry on a motorcycle |

Don't feel too bad. I remember driving a rental Hyundai Accent hatchback. I filled the car with 4 people! Two tall ones in the back! hahaha...
oh well... I got on Route 1 and I don't know how strong the crosswind was, however I could feel the nose sort of wobble at around 50mph!! (It was scary!, even the passengers felt it) The car also had no power at all! In fact I think the 300D is faster...

No problems with wind here
I live in an area notorious for high gusting Santa Ana winds. I've never had any problems with any of the Benzes previously owned (1967 250SE and 84 300SD) or with my current Benzes (91 420SEL or my daughter's 89 300TE).
I used to own a 1988 Cadillac Seville...talk about skittish handling! Perhaps we do expect too much from our Benzes, but in my experience these are the most stable, sure footed cars around!

Small surface area for the wind, that Miata has.
I haven't driven any car that hasn't had drivability problems in high winds (30+). The worst for me, was driving from Phoenix to Tucson in an extended Ford Aerostar. I would frequently get pushed into the lane next to me!

18 wheelers
Interestingly enough, going from every day driving experience, the miata gets blown aside like a piece of paper when 18 wheelers go by. The Mercedes however, does not budge much at all,--go figure!??
