Shaking on the highway

My 98 e320 is shaking in the highway. I can feel the slight shake at low mph, but when i get going 60 or more the car will shake when i take my foot off the gas or when I am barely pushing the gas. IT also shakes, but less, when I am accelerating. When I put the car into neutral at these speeds, the car shakes even more. I am hoping that the tires need to be balanced. Any ideas?

vibrating is a better word for the problem

it is more of a vibration than shaking

You probably have a separated tire or your tires are out of balance. If I were you I'd take a trip to Les Schwab and ask them to balance your tires. They will quote you about $25 to balance (and rotate if needed) your tires. But, I bet after they are done up they will wave the fee - doing it for free. See they want you to come back and buy your tires. They did this to me and have gained a customer for life (their service is the best).

When was the last time you had your tires balanced? I had the same problem after getting new tires. I had to return to Costco to have them re-balance them. 5,000 miles later I returned for the tire rotation and had the same problem again. Come to find out the tech has to double balance the wheels. The experinced tech was the only one who knew this was required.

Consider This

There is another problem with this model which has the same symptoms. The large rubber bushings in the lower control arms of the front suspension go soft and allow vibration in the steering wheel. Somebody needs to test these by putting the car on a rack with the wheels hanging free.
