Shift Lever Sticking

I have a W126 that does not get driven much and the shift lever becomes very hard to move after long periods of time. Anyone know what the most likely place this would be sticking? Would it be outside or inside in the mechanism itself? Thanks.

Which model and year. Auto or manual.

i would

run some oil down the shift lever. pry back the rubber boot and do it.

It is a 90 300sel auto.
