Transmission filter / fluid change on a W126?
 

Did a search- no luck-

I am pretty sure my W126 needs a tranny fluid and filter change. Are these pretty straight forward, or better left for a specialist? I changed the tranny fluid and filter in my old 83' Oldsmobile 98 when I had it (about 14 years ago) and it was simple. Remove the pan, remove the old filter, then install the filter, replace the pan and fill the tranny. Is it as simple on the W126, or are there any other "steps"/precautions that have to take place?

Easy, but somewhat messy job. I use a remote starter to flip the torque converter until the drain plug is accessible. The drain plugs on the pan take a ridiculously low amount of torque. Easy to overtorque and cut the filter gasket leading to a leak. Don't ask how I know.

You said the "drain plugs on the pan." Don't you mean the bolts that hold the pan?

Thanks. If I can get a local transmission to go it at a pretty reasonable rate, or our local MB independent shop, I may let them do it.


Not too keen on making a mess in the driveway. I just remembered that we changed the fluid/filter in my 73' Pontiac last summer (very simple), but it was very messy. Tranny fluid was all over the driveway where the car was setting. :rolleyes:

If they used the same tranny in your car that is used in the 30SDL it is a easy change.
there is a drain plug in the pan and the tourqe converter.I use one of the large clear plastic storage containers.put it under and drain fluid.My pan had little metal bosses that made it inpossable to overtighten pan gasket unless you are Egor with a impact gun.
