Intermittent No Start - 99 E320
 

Had a recent alternator failure while 80 miles from home - alternator was replaced, 3 month old battery OK. I now have an intermiitent starting problem - Engine cranks fine and very strongly, yet no start. Tried it the next day, started and restarted several times with no problem. Tried again to start yesterday and no start - again engine cranks strongly. Seems odd that the starting problem began after alternator replacement when there were no prior starting problems. 70,000 miles. Any ideas/ suggestions would be appreciated.

From other threads I read it could by your crankshaft position sensor. I do not have experience with this but you could try doing a search.

Car started yesterday and was able to drive to dealer. They had car 2 days and didn't experience thye problem. Service advisor told me there were no stored trouble codes. They advised me that it was probably the crank position sensor since a failure in the sensor doesn't generate a trouble code. I decided to have the sensor replaced. We'll see what happens

I have no idea what the problem would be, but I do have a question.

If you dont mind, can you tell me the price of such a repair? Sounds really expensive to me. If you do mind, thats just fine also

Similar problem on my wife's 1998 version and it turned out to be the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Also had a similar problem on my 1996 E300D and it turned out to be the K40 relay. Hope this helps!

Picked up car yesterday - runs fine and starts every time - crankshaft position sensor part cost $80 - was charged for 2 hours labor which includes all the diagnostic time - stealership labor rate is 102.50 per hour. Just didn't want to not attempt a fix and have the thing fail when I leave work late on some cold, snowy night. Service advisor asked me to call him in about a week or so to let him know how car is. I think they've had the same problem with other cars in their shop

Glad to hear that you are up and running. I should think about purchasing a crankshaft sensor since mine is originall.
