Help! Car falling apart...

I bought my 1995 C220 used from an auction last July and I don't drive it very often.
My waterpump just went out and now I have a severe knocking/rattling sound coming from the gearshift.

Along with the knocking noise, I now feel a klunking vibration underneath the car.

Does anyone have a clue what's wrong with my car?

Ummmm...yes. The previous owner neglected the hell out of this car.

That's why you found the car at auction. The dealers keep the good ones to resell and send the rest to auction.

I think he was probably looking for a more constructive answer, but we need more information. Gearshifts themselves don't really knock or rattle. When does it make this noise - when you're moving the gearshift, when the car is moving, etc. Is it an RPM noise, or a vehicle speed noise. We need more clues. Same for the clunking underneath.

The vibration in the gearshift happens anytime gas is applied and the clunking underneath the car only happens up to 35 mph...after that it goes away.
I had the feeling i got screwed on this purchase...everything occurred all at once. It was fine when I bought it and probably would have been discovered earlier had it been driven more.

Calm down. Sounds like you need a water pump and some motor and tranny moints. Cheap stuff.

Transmission is good. May have to double check motor mounts.
Anything else?

OK, I'll be nice now.

Check your exhaust system. Check for overall integrity and loose/broken mounts.

I have a 1995 C-280 with over 151,000 miles on it. Aside from a few little quirks and one very expensive repair ( A/C system ) it has been a real solid and safe car which I drive on highways every day.

Check those flex discs too! Don't drive it until you determine if they are ok. Good luck! don't worry, once you get the bugs worked out these cars can be recovered from neglect.

A rattling shifter could be as simple as replacing the two plastic bushings: one at the trans and the other at the shifter lever.

OK, its a pain to get the new ones in but great once done.
