Rebuild or Replace Calioers

I need to either rebuild or replace the LR caliper on my W126 sedan. The outboard piston is sticking and causing rapid pad wear.

DIY rebuilding is the most economical solution. Is it practical to do so? I have never had a caliper problem until now.

My success as an automotive hobbyist in rebuilding wheel cylinders versus replacement was never very satisfactory. If that is the experience others have had with DIY rebuilding of calipers, then I will replace...

Rebuilding calipers isn't too hard if you know what to do and what to look out for. Since rebuilt calipers are economical, I suggest simply replacing them.

The kits are pretty simple, be sure there is absolutely no pitting or scoring on the piston(s). If so they must be replaced. I believe there is a specific orientation for the piston in the caliper after replacing the seals.

DO NOT split the calipers in half. They are not to be serviced this way and in the event you decide not to rebuild them but to turn them in for core credits, most places will not take them.

I have always been pleased with rebuilts and amazed at the low relative cost.

Rebuilding Calipers

Thanks - Haasman and Myanoch

I will rebuild when I next need to service a caliper. 'Had to buy a rebuild (rebuilt by Cardone) this time as delivery time for the rebuild kit was going to be five days.
