Question 1983 240D Auto Trans not engaging

Hi there! I just received a 1983 Mercedes 240D with 198k miles for Christmas!!!
1983 240D Auto Trans not engaging-new-mercedes.jpg

The interior and exterior is a great condition and the engine runs like a champ!

Here is the problem (isnt there always?), she wont go into gear! It was like this when it was bought so we are not sure what happened to make the trans go out. When you take the car and put it into gear, you can hear it trying to go into gear. It does not move at all, you can just hear a slight decrease in RPM's.

I have changed the transmission filter and trans fluid. The filter looked normal and the transmission was not burnt... so now we are left scratching our heads.

Does anyone have any ideas on what it might be before we put a new trans in this car. Might there be something obvious there that we might be missing? This is my first 240D so I did not know if there was something obvious out there that might be an easy fix for this problem!

Any and all help would be GREATLY GREATLY GREATLY appreciated! Thank you in advance for all of your help!

Hello. If that is the car in your avatar, then that looks like an extremely nice 240D! I do not know a lot about them, as I am a "newbie" Mercedes owner as well, but I am sure someone here will be able to shed some lights on this.

Hopefully it is something simple.

Cool

Does the trans go into reverse?? IF so then the problem isn't pressure related.

IF not then you are better off looking for another trans (used).

Yeppers, that is the car in the avatar! I dont know that I have ever seen one of these in such great condition. I am only the second owner of the car and the original owner had (as my grandma would say) more money than sense! Unlike my grandmother though, I have no problems getting my fingernails dirty and working on my own car! Try being a girl and taking a car into the mechanics! Yikes!! Not that all of them are bad... but there are some bad apples out there... and I think that I have ran into everyone of them!

You can hear it trying to go into all of the gears- the car just wont move at all. I guess the best way that I can explain it is this- When I have it in park, I shift it into all of the different gears and it sounds like it would normally sound when you are shifting your car into neutral. Does that make any sense? Does that sound like it is pressure related or should I just give up and install a new (used) transmission?

I was pretty resolved that I was going to have to put in a transmission, I just wanted to check with some people who know better than me! Thank you again, I do appreciate all of your input!

'83 tranny not engaging.....

I'm not a mechanic but I do own an '83 manual car that has been great, don't give up on your new possession.

I don't see any mention that you checked the transmission fluid. The first thing I'd do is have the transmission serviced, that is a new filter and proper fluid to the correct level and then see what you have.

Good luck, srharvey
