Lower A-Arm/Wishbone/Ball joint Q
Hi folks,
Christmas eve blessed us with this prob : http://www.mx5ireland.com/members/sr...erc%20oops.JPG http://mx5ireland.com/members/srigle...rc%20oops1.JPG So, I've removed the spring and the nuts from the eccentric bolts in prep for removing the arm and bringing it to someone to press in a new ball joint. But first I need someone to clariy what exactly needs to be done... I've seen these for sale : http://www.mx5ireland.com/members/sr.../balljoint.jpg Can I have this pressed in as I suggested above? Or will I need to replace the arm? To remove the broken bits, is it just a matter of removing the clamp bolt on the steering knuckle and then the top half of the broken joint slips out ? (the bit with the ball). Also, on a related note... if this the above is the case, I see "ball joint seperators" for sale... why wouldn't you just remove the clamp bolt from the steering knuckle to drop the wishbone/A-Arm? Many thanks! Steve |
Yes
You can have those ball joints pressed into your control arm if there is no damage to it.
You are correct about removing the rest of the joint. Ball joint seperators,(also called pickle forks) seperate ball joints that stick, most due, I usally will just use a hammer and pry bar and put pressure on the arm and hit the spindle where the joint goes thru two or three times and get a better effect. Seperators tend to damage the boot. |
Many thanks for the reply! :)
I'll have a go at removing the rest of the joint tonight. |
