clunk at the rear only at a full stop 190E
I have searched, and found multiple types of problems with clunking. My problem however is that I have a clunk at the rearonly when I stop fully, sometimes the clunk is heard even after the car is fully stopped!!! At least at the moment the car stops, there is this noise especially if I stop the car faster hence pressing the brake pedal harder.
A lot of the guys here have clunks when the automatic transmission shifts (up and down) but that is not my problem. Even if the w201 auto trannys are well known to cause hard shifting between 1st and 2nd shift, there is no clunk in my car at all, just some force in shifting but no noise. I have taken the front flex disc before and it is stiff and hard like a rock, but I notice some lines (call them cracks) in the rubber area but still the rubber is firm. If it was the culprit, wouldn't I have clunks when the trans. is shifting??? One of the common recommendations is that I get under the car with the trans. in neutral and rotate the driveshaft and check for play until it "engages" with the movement of the back tires. Assuming that indeed there is some play, what components could be bad???? |
190E "Clunk"
I had a similar problem with my 190E 2.6 only I got it intermittently as I decelerated from high speeds. We could find nothing. I gave the car to my mechanic who drove the freeway every day. After a week he finally heard it. It was a bad u-joint in one of the rear axles. He had only seen this once in 10 years.
