LOST KEYS VIN MADE KEYS is it possible
 

I have 83-84 300D turbo and i lost the keys to it so i was wondering if keys made out from a vin number would work. is there anyone that ordered keys from the dealer and work/worked. can someone help please

Any MB dealer can order new keys. You'll need to show proof of ownership and probably pre-pay.

i ben researching and its a 50/50 thing i want to know if anyone had done this process b4 and if for my year car 1985 benz 300d thanks

i have personally done it several times for my own cars, both US and euro models with out a problem, at our shop we have probably done it hundreds with out any issues, the only hitch is if the locks are not the original ones installed from the factory, if someone had changed them in the past to non coded versions. the oldest i have needed keys for was 1971, so yours should work

does anyone have a link were as i can order the keys online. i saw a posting for that to be possible. i would rather not goto the dealer which is 45-60 minutes from me.

i tihnk its best to just go to the dealer and deal with them. What if you order online and they make the key wrong? I was just there yesterday but only had keys copied. The blank was $20 though =( I though that was expensive but imagine If I had the flip key with the programmin and lost that. Thats about $200 out the door! GL

Keys from dealer work. Period.

A master key ordered at the dealer will work best and cost less than paying a locksmith to make a key. A new master key shouldn't cost more than twenty bucks. The key blank is hard steel, not the soft brass used by locksmiths. Mercedes keeps records for a long time. I even had a key made for my ex 1977 450SL. Good luck.

how does one prove ownership if ordering online?

Don't count on someone having to prove ownership to get keys made. My 450SEL was stolen by someone 'lifting the VIN' (getting keys made without proving ownership). I was told by the police that since I parked my car at the train station every day it was an easy target. The thieves write down the VIN from the windshield, get keys made by an unethical locksmith (or employee at a dealer) and come back a few days later to drive off with your car. This was in 1997 and the car was 20 years old! A few parts were taken off and the car was abandoned in the Bronx. My car wasn't that nice before, but I guess someone needed new taillights for theirs.

I now live in CA and have a 560SEL. I'm thinking of changing the locks just for this reason but so far I don't park my car in a public lot on a regular basis (thieve needs to be able to find your car a couple of days later after key is made).

Impala, you would fax the MB dealer a copy of the vehicle registration.

I had to get a new key for my '91 300E last year. The dealer made me show up in person (an hours drive) and show proof of ownership and a picture ID. This Info along with the VIN was sent to Mercedes. The dealer told me that since Mercedes got some negative publicity about car thefts that they had clamped down on the key replacement process.

I used my Insurance card with the VIN number on it and my driver's license for proof.

In addition to having to go to the dealer to order the key, I also had to go back to pick it up and go through the same process again. They will not mail it to you. I think the cost was around $22.

I don't think dealers or anyone else can circumvent the process because they have to make copies of your documentation and send it to Mercedes.
