I saw on a posting a week our so ago where someone had their
oil tested.Got back report of high silica content in oil. They where using a K&N That worried me.I pulled the air cleaner cover on my 1980.SL and saw that the intake plenum was covered with grit.I pulled the K&N and put back the stock filter.I contacted K&N.They told me to check height of filter. It was three tenths to short.I let them know.I have not heard another word.I have used these filters for many years, always with good luck. Not on the SL.I reccomend checking to see if grit is getting by the filter.Michael

Poor SL

My W124030 has had a K&N filter since new. It now has 171,300 miles.
In removing the top of the OEM housing I find nothing larger than small sparrows.
There ofcourse is no grit.

I would love to get a K&N filter, but I can't find one anywhere.
The car is a 1989 300se (UK).
If anybody knows where I can get one from, please tell me!!

Thanks

Oliver,

If the partsshop cannot get it, then try, http://www.autobarn.com. They have a K&N filter for your car.

Part number is E-2867
Height - 3.25"
ID - 13"
OD - 14.75"

This is for a sedan and am not sure if there is any difference for it being UK. Buy locally if possible, otherwise, give them a try.

Take care,
Brian W.

You addressed Brian, but I can reply as to the success I've had with K&N filters in other makes of cars as well as my 1987 300E.
Everything advertised.
The least expensive performance increase that can be had.
Don't tell anyone you are using a K&N Filter for there are those who have done their own testing and find the K&N Filter to be inferior in filtering the intake air.
Discount the manufacturers who OEM K&N Filters.

Oliver, where in the UK are you?
While with General Motors Engineering Staff, I was assigned to VM at Luton in the Midlands.
I lived in Ketterring in a little semi-detached.
I truely loved the Midlands.
Let me hear where you live and what you do in The UK.

Oh yes I've been to Birmingham.
As I remember it was an Industrial City, a lot of air polution during the '70s.
There was a large population of middle-easterners.
But you living in Moseley you should experience the poor air.
Oh well we have our Industriel Cities as well; even though they have been cleaned up.
