emissions test results
just passed emissions test in Arizona. I wondered about my numbers and how they compare to other cars and other mercedes same year and model. Hydrocarbons (hc's) tested at 6 (tested in ppm) and allowable level is 220. Carbon Monoxide shows 0.00% and standard is 1.20%. The car is a 94 c280.

Almost any car from 1986 with catalyst & O2 sensor should come up with almost all "ZERO'S" on an emission test!

Not true with most M103s (and most other CIS-E engines)even if everything is in perfect working order. HC is usually well above average for the year group. Single digit HC and zero CO is very good, and some cars achieve this, but it is well below average for a '94 vintage car.

Being a Georgia Certified Emission inspector since the 70's, (done 10,000 inspections) I can tell you that good running cars pass with ZERO's about 90%+ of the time!

You should see the emissions test database from Califonia.
Average PASSING emissions for the '87-'92 year group are about a third the limit for HC and NOx - but only about 15 percent for CO (remember, this is the average for cars that PASS the tailpipe limits) and about a quarter fail their initial biennial test. Data for newer year groups is better due to improved emissions control technology and less wear and tear. In particular, CIS-E engines tend to be high emitters. Duke |
