Kompressor a thing of the past?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but does anyone know why MB stopped making the Kompressors in 2006 (at least in the C-Class?) They have switched to the 2.5L 6 cyl. for the Sport sedan. I have an SLK Kompressor and I'm just wondering if there's a technical reason or history of problems?

I think they wanted to compete more aggressively against BMW and the like, as they do not have any 4 cylinders in the current 3 series.

I think a DOHC V6 instead of a low displacement 4 cylinder for the same price is a pretty good deal.

I read in CAR magazine about 18 months ago a report that Mercedes wanted to get away from supercharging, and instead use turbocharging when displacement wasn't enough.
The report stated - and I don't recall if it was a source from Mercedes or just a technical fact - that supercharging places weight up high on top of the engine, which is detrimental to handling. And that supercharging means high gas consumption whereas in turbocharging they can manipulate fuel usage better.

That article came out when the twin turbo V-12's were just hitting the market.

Then I remember reading an article in CAR some months later that AMG was continuing work on superchatging.

Maybe they'll do like Volkswagen.
Use a supercharger AND a turbocharger on the SAME engine ( in tandem ).
Far as I can tell, the S/C is mounted so low on my car, I can't see how it could raise the centre of gravity.
To answer the original question, I'm not aware of any " typical " problems with the S/c, and certainly no more potential problems than with a turbo. ;)

AMG is going to large displacement V8's. So at least in the AMG line supercharges are getting phased out.

I am thinking that the maintenece is much cheaper in the long run with a n/a car vs. a supercharged or turbo. Once either one of those fail then it will be a good amount of money for you to shell out? Correct me if I am wrong

So in the future the E55, CLS55, G55, and whatever other cars with the blown V8 will get phased out? Hmm...I wonder what their replacement engines will be. A high revving DOHC design like the new BMW M5's engine would be yummy.

Look for the 6.3l 4-cam V-8 in everything from the R class to the SLK.
510 hp and 498 ft-lbs. Can redline at 7000. AMG has made some Bi-turbo
test mules that make over 700hp!! Yahoo, the HP war continues!!
The ML and R63's will be the first in the US to get the new motors sometime
this summer.

Yes, AMG is going to return to naturally aspirated engines.

Here is a link to the new DOHC V8 that AMG is developing worth more than 500 hp.

The new V8 will be amazing. The E55 is the past, look forward to the insane E63.

The HP war continues MB needs to get going Caddy and BMW are catching up!

Ah, the mid 70's creed "no replacement for displacement!" You gotta love it.

mctwin2kman 01-23-2006 05:00 PM

AMG did state that they will use Turbo's when needed in the future. So the Twin Turbo V-12 is supposed to stay around.....

Forget the E63, I can't wait for a C or SLK63!!!!
Can you say "Power Induced Oversteer"?
MMMM......Excuse me whilst I wipe the drool off.

Kleeman has tuned some sick C55's. The currant C55 is already a NA V8 so the C63 will be a big power upgrade.

But anyway Kleeman has tuned a few that will run to 60 in the 3 second range and the 1/4 mile and top speed numbers are amazing.
