Coil spring compressor
 

I'm considering doing some suspension work on my 107 SLC and need to remove my springs. What type of spring compressor is reccomended? I see on ebay the model j-1801 for mercedes, but doesn't appear to be for the 107 and costs quite a bit. Could I get by safely using a generic version that works with clamping hooks? Thanks:eek:

One of the fellows attempted to use a non-specific compressor for the W107 and he failed miserably. The design of that vehicle seems to mandate the proper tool for that job and the typical M/B spring compressor is not adequate.

The standard spring compressor for M/B would not work for him.

As always, there appears to be no definitive or explicite way to do this. If I do the front springs with the compressor as in the manual, I'm not sure what type compressor to use. The Hayes manual way instructs you to do it with a floor jack, sounds easy and less expensive, but could be tough to get everything back together again (tough ain't bad, impossible is a *****). Would someone who has done this on a 107 please enlighten me as tto the best way! If I gotta spend $400 bucks on a special MB compressor, I might as well have my indy do it, but I will not learn anything and deprive myself of doing it myself. :confused:

Over on the other thread, Fred indicated that he bought a typical M/B spring compressor and was successful in doing the job.

You might ask him how he managed to do this.

If this spring compressor can work (and it does seem as thought it does NOT work) we rent one here.

I rented the Klann a couple of years ago to remove the front springs my 560SL, but it would not work. I ended up using a floor jack a shown in the manual.
