abrupt stall 1999 E430

My E430 sport (1999) with about 90k miles, has begun to suddenly just stall while I'm driving. And it won't start up again for at least 45 minutes. When it does start again it will only go about a couple of miles before shutting down again.
Help! Does anyone have any ideas?

See what codes you get from the ODBII interface. Thats all I've got

Check fuel supply. Is the pump shutting down? Pressure should be almost
4.0 bar whilst cranking. The crankshaft position sensor could also be a culprit. The tend to fail hot.
You really should have a shop pull any stored obd codes the computers may have. A MB dealer will have access to vehicle specific codes reguarding the
interior networks that you just cant get from Autozone or a gas station with
a $300 code checker.
Good luck,
DR.D

I would think the crankshaft sensor, it is the most common failing item for that particular complaint on the 112,113 engines. Small investment of about $45.00 or there abouts.

My moneys on the CPS, see http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/ml-gl-g-wagen-r-class-unimog-sprinter/102905-crankshaft-position-sensor-diy.html?highlight=cps+replacement ;)

As soon as you detect a stutter or stalling look at the tachometer.
See if the tach needle falls in slight encrements - usually a fuel supply issue.
Or, if the tach needle just slaps to 0, with no pause or stutter -usually electrical.

Also when was your Fuel Filter last changed (air filter last changed), and check the engine compartment for any loose or disconnected vacuum hoses.

Your car is due for a new CPS anyway. They do wear-out. Maybe they should be a 100k miles maintenance item. Cost about $80 online. Very easy DIY. If it fixes the problem, OK, if not, you have saved yourself from future problems with the CPS.
