Chain guide removal on 260E

My friend is replacing the head gasket on his 1987 260E (103) engine. Can anyone out there tell me how he can remove the hollow threaded pin that holds the guide without buying the MB tool (about $130) or is it not possible to remove without the tool? Thanks in advance for your advise.

It's no big problem and you don't need the fancy tool although I have one and find it handy and time saving.

Find a relatively long bolt or screw that will thread into the pin. Then find a nut that has a larger ID than the OD of the pin. Find a washer that the bolt/screw will fit through and is larger than the ID of the nut. Put the bolt/screw through the washer and nut and thread it into the pin and then start turning, threading and messing around until you pull it out.

You may have to resort to a nut that the bolt/screw will thread into and use it on the outside of the big nut and tighten it down to the nut then turn the bolt/screw to jack out the pin.

The other choice is making a slide hammer for a bolt that will thread into the pin.

Use your enginuity and you can get it out, even with my crude description.

Good luck,

You can make a poor man's puller

Get a 3 1/2 inch pipe nipple with two screw on ends. Drill a hole in one of the ends and put a bolt through it which is long enough to go all the way into the rail pin. Get a 5 or 10 pound weight from a barbell set and put it on the pipe nipple and then screw both ends on. Heat the aluminum head around the pin so it will expand and give it a few whams.
