Spindle Wear
1989 560SEL
I'm in the process of replacing my front wheel bearings. I've noticed some rust colored patches on the spindles and on the inside of the bearings (where they contact the spindle). Is this normal? I've attached a photo of one of the spindles. The car has 140K miles. You can also click on this link to get a supersized image of the spindle (caution, 800KB) http://http://dashdotcom.com/spindle/spindle-l.jpg ![]() |

there
should be no wear on spindles. this little patch of surface rust is nothing to worry about. it is really just a superficial discoloring.
it doesnt hurt to ask though. good luck tom w

That is a sign of moisture & has NO effect on the structure of that part.
You could use some very light sand paper to remove if you so desired.

M.B.DOC, what about using some fine steel wool to remove the discoloration?

I apologize for jumping in on your question. I would not use steel wool. Small particles of the steel wool can embed themselves into the metal being polished. This could cause a corrosion problem. I would suggest using Scotchbrite instead. Make sure you clean the area really well before greasing it up again.

The rust you see is normal on bearing mount surfaces. It is called "fretting". It's the result of micromovement on the mount surfaces, which abrades the metal surfaces and converts that metal to iron oxide. You'll probably see shiny areas nearby.

The spots cleaned up easily with 600 grit sandpaper. I'll clean them with brakleen before greasing and reinstalling the hub. Thanks everyone.
