pwr window doesnt work =(
One of the power windows in my car doesnt work and I dont know why. It worked perfect to the prior years. When the front master button is pressed the window doesnt go down. When the pass rear window button (side that doesnt work) is pressed, the window still doesnt go down. I am thinking it is the motor? Or should I just replace the switched and see?

check the fuse first.
Mine had a blown fuse, and I replaced it. It blew again, when I actuated the window switch. so I went out to look for the ground, and opening the door panel, I found some corrosion around the motor that had completed a circuit into the metal part of the door, causing the ground. |
well if its the fuse then wouldnt other items not work also? all my other windows word fine. But anyway, I will just check up behind the door and check the fuse. HOPEFULLY my motor or regulator isnt broke

Sounds like it may be the motor, but since the switch is probably easier to replace, I would do that first. If it is like most older Mercedes- if it was the fuse, then the opposite side window probably would not work either. I am not sure what year this changed.
Good luck! |
I would pop the switch out and take it apart. watch out that you dont lose the little ball bearings that allow the switch to rock. clean all of the contacts and put back together.

Swap switches
before you buy a new switch, check to see if it is the same part number as any of your remaining switches and swap them. Depending on your model you may have two different switches (part numbers) in the same car. Also check to see if you hear the motor running. If it is and the window is not moving it is probably the plastic swivel piece that rides in the track and atttaches to the glass. They tend to break eventually, not a bad repair job and the part is cheap.

When I press the switches, no matter if from the front master controls or the door itself, I do not hear the motor running. I have yet to check fuses and test the switches.

Normally if it is a fuse issue, at least one other window (opposite side usually) will not work either.

windows won't open
The rear windows in my '86 300E often won't work in the winter. Sometimes when the car is just idling they won't open but, at highway speeds when the alternator may be putting out a slightly higher voltage, the windows start working. I've also had a window, which wasn't opening, start to work when the sun warmed up that side of the car.
My theory is that the mechanism lubrication has hardened with age requiring more power from the battery and/or softening from heat. Note that my windows seem to work better in the summer. Also sometimes in the rainy season I think deposits of ??? get washed into the seams between the window glass and the rubber around the windows. I've had windows suddenly open with a snapping sound when they haven't been opened for a long time. A spray of silicone lube in the window channels seems to help for this. Next summer I plan to learn to take off the door panels. Then I'll clean and relube as many moving parts as I can find. I've also had a mechanic tell me that it is a good idea to "exercise" each window regularly to keep the window moving freely. |
wow, thanks. Will keep that in mind.

Before you buy a replacement motor/regulator, if it comes to that, get some long wire and jump the motor to your battery (reverse the leads to move in opposite direction). Sometimes the wires in the door flex and break over time. A little dificult to get at and splice, but if thats your problem, a new motor won't help.

sometimes
the motors stick and can be removed and cleaned and lubed. i have done this at least once.

When i bought my 86 300E,the pass window wudnt go up or down. I bought new switches for the console and it still wouldnt work.Took the panel off and pulled the motor out.cleaned it and found out someone had been in their and had tightened the backlash screw on the shaft end. Loosened it a 1/4 turn and reconeccted it to the door and it worked. Also discovered that someone had put a left switch in the right position.
