Screeching noise and my car will hardly move...I feel like Charlie Brown!
I installed Mercedes Benz Lug-Locks the other day on my 99 CL500. The locks were longer than the standard lug, but I didn’t give it much thought since it still went in, though it was quite tight (I had to torque it to get it to ‘seat’ in).
I went to move the car and it would hardly move. So I uninstalled the lug-locks and put the original lugs back in. Unfortunately, when I try to move the car the rear wheels, especially the drivers side rear wheel, makes a horrible screeching high-pitched noise along with the fact that the car moved very slowly as if the emergency brake is on. The car is difficult to move to say the least. A couple of notes: -I’m obviously mechanically challenged . -I uninstalled the rear wheels to see if I could notice anything wrong but did not notice anything out of place as far as I could tell. -I did not rotate the rotors when I uninstalled the wheels. -The rotor/hub on the driver’s side would only move a ‘shimmy’ back and forth. -I have subscribed to the Alldata.com but I wasn’t able to find anything that would clue me in to my problem. how much longer? I'd try to see if taking the luglock off would let me rotate the wheel. I think the longer lug screwed something up, but I dont know the car

When installing lugbolts that are too long ( it doesn't take much ), the extra length will bind on the parkingbrake mechanism, and sometimes distort or damage it.
You'll have to pull the rotors and take a look at it.

On lug bolts, too long--even just a little--is NOT ok.

Concur with Manny. Too long a lug bolt can destroy the parking brake mechanism. Rear rotors need to be pulled for verification (parking brake assembly is a complete separate system from the regular brakes).

The consesus here and through someone else, seems to be that I screwed up the E-Brake mechanism. It's a stupid and expensive mistake, but Oh-well . Thanks again for all the responses, it's greatly appreciated. |

Update on Parking Brake Mechanism Problem
Hey guys, I wanted to update you as well as for archive reasons.
So I had my CL500 flatbeded to my mechanic. I explained the problem I was having along with the probable diagnosis. Sure enough it was the parking brake mechanism as stated above by Manny (Thanks). Part Number-140.420.09.20 . The parking brake springs were broken by the length of the lug-locks on the rear wheels. So they replaced the entire mechanism including the brake shoes and springs. So the lug-locks were apparently the correct lug lengths for the OEM wheels from MB but unfortunately they were incorrect for the after market 20" wheels I have on the car. An expensive mistake but at the end of the day just a mistake. Thanks to everybody for their help. |
