I have posted my problem before. But I'll give a brief history. 1. Front brakes made pulsing noise (most evident while turning at freeway speeds). 2. took to Midas to get brake inspection. 3. Brake inspection showed one front rotor warped. 4. had both rotors turned and both wheel bearings repacked. 5. Seemed fine for about two thousand miles, then started making same noise again(slightly) pedal started to pulse(slightly). Just about this time it gets worse. I was planning to get it checked at a good shop. While driving home(luckily about 20mph) front left wheel bearing blew out. Took car to indie MB shop near house. Front wheel bearing seized up on spindle and blew out. I had a used spindle put on, new wheel bearing and new rotor. Car still made noise. Following week I took the car back to have the other wheel bearing and rotor replaced. Along with a new idler arm bushing. I told them to check the calipers. They said they apeared to be fine, but to take it back in 2 weeks to check for abnormal wear. I took the car back, but they couldn't tell yet. Come back in two more weeks. Since having new rotors, wheel bearings and Idler arm bushing, I have noticed that the steering wheel seems to vibrate back and forth very slightly. It's very subtle, but I feel it. Maybe even more when the car is cold. It just doesn't feel smooth. I jacked up the front and noticed that the driver side front wheel had less drag. The other side seemed to drag a little at spots. Could my new rotor be warping already? What could cause this? Is it the calipers? I'm taking the car back in a few days to let them check it out again. If I do need new front calipers, what would they cost? I have already submitted a request from Parts shop but I wont hear from them until tomorrow. Sorry for the very long story, but I thought the more history I provided the easier it would be to get help. Thant you for any help you could give. andy

If this is for you 1980 300cd I just looked up your calipers in the Fastlane catalog and they do have them. The car came with either bendix or ate calipers. When replacing both it dose not matter if you use diffrent than what the car came with. I would go with the ATE brand new calipers when doing in pairs. You can go to http://www.peachparts.com/catalog and click on online catalog and look up your calipers by year make and model then click on the brake gruop then in sub catagory click on calipers. Check out that price they have on them is incredible. Good luck τΏτ

You should not turn the rotors on these cars. Actually there is no need to. The rotors are about as cheap as having them turned. The chain brake shops are used to doing brakes on a Taurus or a Suburban. Keep your Benz out of there.

Good luck,

Hmmm.....

His Midas experience sounds strangely familiar...almost the same as I related regarding my Dad's pick-up and a front brake job.

Larry hit the nail on the head.

Franchise operations like Midas cater to the Chevy, Ford, Dodge crowd. Another thing they do is quote a seemingly better than avg. price for the pads/shoes, then add on a fee for "hardware". Recently they quoted me $27.00 for the 4 small pad retaining clips used on an Accord. Pads were $39.00.

The Honda dealer sold me the entire kit for about $5.00 less than Midas wanted. Ended up doing the work myself.

In a recent post, Steve Brotherton indicated there was value in after-market rotors; however, OEM pads were the way to go(Pagid, Jurid, Textar).

As already stated, the difference in price between turning rotors and replacing is slim.

Order the parts from PartsShop and do the work yourself.

By the way, I mean no offense to those of you who drive American cars. There appears to be more of them and I believe this is what the franchisers focus on.

I just replaced my front calipers on my 380 SEC the dealer sold them for about $200 each..if you have a place called Bap Geon...I got mine for $89.00 and got $20 back when I gave them the old ones..my benz has floating front calipers on them and I think they are more $$ not sure. I also got the front brake pads for $34.00 instead of the $70 dealer price. I did buy new rotors for the car for $76 there also.

ONE WARNING they did order the wrong parts for my car the first time but the 2nd time they got it right.

Once your rotors are warped they can not be fixed. I had a terrible bounce on the front right side..this took care of the problem I had.

Thanks for the input. In case I haven't made it clear in my original post, I did not take it back to midas, nor will I ever. A mistake on my part. I think I'm going to put new pads and calipers on. I think I have the Bendex type. Which ones are better? If I do get the ATE calipers, do they bolt up just the same? thanks andy.
