Has anyone done a modification of the W126 rear view mirror to one which is light-sensitive (like those in the W210)?
Quite keen on the modification to cut the glare.

No one has thought of this or attempted a modification?

I know what you mean, that would be great to reduce glare. But my car has NO glare at night from the rear-view mirror. I couldn't figure it out for the longest time! Finally, I realized that my tinted windows reduced the glare dramatically. Just a possibility. And it makes the car look a great deal better!

I never really thought about doing that. It does sound interesting, but I never really saw a reason to do it to my car.

My car's rear window is tinted too, but the glare just comes straight in especially with those "idiot" drivers with high-beam or maladjusted lights on.
And when I drove the W210 at one time, I had to get use to the non-glare rear window. Now that I'm used to the W210 rear view mirror, I have some adjustment problems back in the W124 and 126. Hence gave birth to the idea of modifying the rear-view mirror. I was hoping someone would have done that, and could share the thoughts, experience and price of doing so. Thank you for your input. Well appreciated.

YEP, I have done that...
I have exchanged my W202 rear view mirror for a W210 auto dimming rear view mirror and it is just GREAT! I miss the auto-dimming feature as soon as I am driving a car without it. When I have my power rear screen sunshade up, the auto dimming does not work any more (not enough incoming light from the rear). There are several wires that go to the auto-dimming mirror, but to get it functioned you only need to connect two; it is a verrrrry easy mod. The fixation of the W210/W202/W124/W201 rear view mirrors are all the same and if I am correct, the fixation of a W126 mirror is the same as well. To hook up the electrical part of the mirror, you can connect it to the wires of the front courtesy light...it is as easy as can be. I think that you will have the biggest problem finding an auto dimming mirror...they cost approx. US$275,- new at the dutch dealer... greetingz,

And the auto-dimmer will work at all times? Not just when the dome (courtesy) lights are on? How does it work?

Basically the mirror needs a ground and a power only. There are some other wires that can be connected to the door contacts and the reverse lights, but these are not a "must".
I have powered my rear view mirror by connecting it to the (dash) light so it works when the lights are turned on. There is one sensor in the front and one in the rear of the mirror. When the front sensor sees just a little or no light and the rear sensor sees a certain amount of light, the mirror just starts to dim the glass. The mirror gets darker when the difference in light intensity between the two sensors gets bigger. The other wires (that can be connected) will prevent the rear view mirror from dimming when the door is opened or the car is shifted in reverse... greetingz,

Great to hear of this ...
Its not too messy a job, i.e. removal of the top ceiling cover?

NO, this is not a messy job. You do not need to take out any of the top ceiling cover.
If you want to modify the mirror as easy as possible, you can connect the ground and power wire of the mirror to the ground and ignition plus of the courtesy lights. This is sufficient to have the mirror function well. greetingz,

I checked on the part availability and it costs approx. USD250. But you know what? The dealer REFUSED to sell it to me. He said the part is not suitable for a W126, and will not work.
"Too complicated", he says. What a cheek. I described the process as outlined by MBenz, and he insisted it won't work and proceeded to put the part back on the shelf. He then sat down at the desk looking at me as if to say "what else do you want?". I walked away, thinking of another dealier. But I don't know of any other than him. Ah well.

YMSin...
Now THAT would piss me off!! I'd go back there and regulate. I can't believe you let him get away with that! Call and speak with a manager, and let the man know that he would not sell you a peice to your car, even after you explained that you were aware that it was the "wrong" part. Maybe he'll even give you a deal!

Hottee - he's the boss and the manager and the sales person all in one. And we live in a small town and I think he's the only one around here.
I have to let him get away, coz if I do insist on the part, and it subsequently won't work, I can't get a refund when I normally would. So, for goodwill sake, I shan't push him too hard.

Well.....that is exactly how most of the MB dealers work!!!
I was laughed at in my face when I went to the dealer to buy some additional parts and tried to get some (electrical) information after I explained that I had bought a complete 1996 C36AMG interior with CLIMATE CONTROL to install in my 1993 Diesel. They said that the climate control would NEVER function properly. Can you imagine the look on my face when I went to the dealer (to get something) and three sales persons came walking to my car and asked me whether this was the 1993 "classic" with the 1996 AMG mods they had heard about!!! ymsin; maybe you can order the mirror at Fastlane as well... believe me: ONE powered wire and ONE ground will make the mirror work. greetingz,
