Intermittent start problem

About every 6 months, when I go to start my '98 E430 (hot or cold), it will start and run for 0.5 seconds then just die. I can try and try again with the same results. If I wait 10-15 minutes, it will start and run fine. Then about 6 months later, the problem will come back. The car will actually run for a moment, not just crank, so it seems like it is getting a small burst of fuel, but that's all. I can try to start it 15 times with the same results. Just waiting is the only answer. My dealers knows of no specific problem. I have looked at several forums, some mention a possible fuel pump relay. If you have any other ideas you think I could look into, I would certainly appreciate it.

That engine & the V6 engine starting in 1998 have issues with the flywheel crank sensor... sounds like you may too have that problem!

It sounds like the Drive Authorization System (DAS) is intervening. It will set a fault code if this is the case. The problem may only be a faulty key. Try using your other key and see what happens.

Regarding the DAS, it is interesting you mention a faulty key. The problem previously only occurred with me but about a month ago, I gave my key to my wife and then it happened to her. If a fault code is set, I assume no dash indicator but I would be able to read it with a reader? Also, if it is the key, would that make the key unreliable OR could I reprogram the car to read the key and this would possibly cure the problem? Your suggestions greatly appreciated.

The fault code is "P1570/Das enable not sent" and it will be stored in the engine control module. No warning/malfunction lights will come on. The key can't be re-programmed to correct a DAS problem. You should always have at least two working keys for a DAS equipped MB. Sometimes the keys can fail outright, and if you only have one you're stuck!!! Also, keep in mind that other DAS components can fail, not jusy keys.
