'80 280SL Oil Filter Housing

I'm planning on refreshing the cooling system this next week. Rod radiator, thermostat, water pump, etc. The engine presently fitted is a USA M110 without oil cooler fittings. I'd like to install the EURO housing which does have the required fittings and hoses. My questions are:
1. Is it necessary to remove the intake manifold to install the housing and hoses?
2. Are the housing and hoses compatible with the USA intake manifold? I do have the EURO intake and could install it if it would work better.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think that there are euro and US intake manifolds. There are new and old styles, and they were both used in the 280SL.

From my experience it is difficult to deal with the oil filter housing, but it is also a huge pain to pull the intake. I am not sure why you want to do this - the coolers are expensive and prone to leak and make oil changes are real pain.

Thanks for your input Chuck! The reason that I'd like to utilize the oil cooler is that it's already attached to the side of the radiator and I've got all the rest of the hardware. They're going to pressure check it when they rebuild the radiator.

I'm confused relative to the intake manifold issue. The manifold presently installed has risers that come up from the head and then down into a larger plenum. The manifold that came with the Euro engine has runners that run horizontally into a smaller plenum. It's similar to illustration 3.27 (pg 83 in the Haynes 280/123 Series Manual). Could you tell me which is the preferable manifold to run. Which is the old/new style? When I get the time and money I plan to rebuild the Euro engine so that I can take advantage of the additional HP, so I'll apply all that I learn here to that project.

Thanks again.

The manifold shown on P. 83 in the Haynes manual is the older one. Supposedly, the later (post '81) manifold with the curved runners is a better model. I have never heard any specific information to back this up, but generally MB does not make major changes like that without a reason.

Thanks Chuck!
