The wife broke my passenger seat (W126)

I borrowed this photo from a gallery since it accurately shows my dilema. Many thanks to owner.

The wife put the seat back (just like this photo shows) one day. When I went to restore the seatback to a normal position, it would not go up. It did, however, go back further when I applied pressure to the switch on the door.

I tried again to raise the seatback - no response from switch, but switch continued lower the seatback when instructed.

NOTE: motor does not click when pressure is applied to raise the seatback.

MOTOR?
FUSE?
DOOR PANEL SEAT SWITCH?

I thought I'd ask prior to a purchase.

Thanks for input. The car is in dry dock currently as nobody wants ride with me looking at the sunroof.

Odd post just after Valentines Day

But sounds like the switch is Defunkt and maybe be cleaned by taking it out and disassembling also try pulling up on seat while engaging the switch and rapidly activating the switch sometimes will get it back to working....

here's what I plan to do first - and will advise after that.

found this posting and has good information - FYI for other's with similar problems and want to attack the switch first.

and if that doesn't work, pull the panel off the back of the seat and put a jumper directly to the motor (at the lower right with cover removed) - then pull the wires till you get it fixed right.

Try contact cleaner first

Before you do anything drastic try contact cleaner. You can get a spray can of it at Radio Shack or at an electronics store.
Put the little red tube on the spray nozzle, pull the plastic seat button off the switch, spray the contact cleaner into the switch and work it back and forth.
It works every time for me.

Probably a bad seat switch. I have needed to pull apart and rebuild both of mine. If that doesn't work I think you can get a new one for $100 or so.

Take off the switch... then bridge the connections at the plug if it still doesn't go its probably a wire to a motor inside the seat... they move back and forth over years and tend to wear and break with age.

Weight of wife?:D
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

weighed the wife.....but

she won't let me publish the recorded weight.

Update on seat is that it's fixed. It was not without issues, however.

First recommendation to readers is to use tissue paper or thin towel to cushion the screwdriver against woodpanel so it's not damaged or scratched by prying out the plastic panel with a metal object. BTW, it seems better to pry from the side farthest from the door handle , rather than closest. Does that make sense? I noticed a cutout in the wood panel to accomodate the plastic cover - it's basically in the middle (vertically speaking) at the edge of the plastic panel. I'll get a picture of it after this week.

First, I removed the seat buttons - bottom/back/head rest.

Then, pryed off panel. I broke a seatback stalk(lower of the 2) support from prying the panel. It does not glue back on well. As a result, my seat back adjustor button is a bit flimsy to the touch, but will not fall out even with door closing and opening. I don't plan on buying a new mechanism simply because of the broken stalk.

I tried to remove the mechanism, but could not figure out how to disconnect it beyond the 2 long screws that were attached. That was almost a nightmare - all I could imagine was those screws falling into the door compartment out of reach. Lucklily they didn't. The mechanism moves around a bit without the screws, but it doesn't want to come out, and I didn't want to force it. Maybe I was missing something.

Since I could not remove the seat mechanism, I simply sprayed the radio shack contact cleaner into every orifice I could find. It was noticably dirty and grimy from years of use. Sure enough, the seat back worked after using contact cleaner.

I will try to publish a foto of what I'm talking about with the seat mechanism. I now know how to remove the panels without problem.

On a lighter note.. the wife was quite impressed that I was able to rectify this situation without the assistance of my mechanic. I'm usually not mechanically inclined at all.

After you pull the two screws out that hold the seat switch just tilt it and wiggle it. It will come out I have done it many times.

Taking it apart is fun it is full of balls and springs. I would suspect that 90% of the "broken" seat switches out their just need to be cleaned. I can't see one wearing out.
