When to change spark plugs in '01 CLK430?

The car has 66,000 miles. Did they come with 100,000 mile plugs?

Exclamation

MB SUGGESTS a maximun of 5 years OR 100K miles which ever happens FIRST...sounds like the 5 years will happen first in your case..and maybe already HAS.

MB should've recommended replacing the ignition wires at 60K. It seems they don't last as long as the plugs. If the car has a slightly bumpy idle while in "D", the wires are a likely cause. If left unattended it'll start throwing mis-fire codes. This is very common with M112/113 engines.

I can understand replacing plugs by mileage but not by time like 5 years. I can understand hoses, belts, brake fluid, etc. which all deteriorate with age but not plugs, they made of metal and ceramic.

Yes, they may not be worn after 5 years with low mileage, but after 5 years of a spark plug sitting in an aluminum head you will find that they are not exactly easy to remove. After enough time, they will get stuck and you may end either stripping some threads or breaking the plugs trying to get them out of the head.

I pulled one plug to check the condition and it was in great shape but it didn't have any antiseize compound on the threads. Don't they put some on at the factory? I guess I could pull all 16 plugs and coat the threads but I don't plan to keep the car anywere near the 100,000 mile mark when they would need to be changed.

G-Benz, have you done a spark plug change on your cars yet? Just curious how many people are finding the spark plugs easy or somewhat difficult to remove from the head after an extended period of time.

Mercedes initially made the change to every 100k miles or 4 years, whichever comes first, and then changed it back to every 100k miles or 5 years whichever comes first.

plug and wires

Have to change my plug wires at 57,000 because rough idle and stumbling, the SL guru at the dealer gave me some free advise he told me that he had changed plug wires in cars with as low as 20,000 miles on V8 113 engines because idle and stumbling and that if it was his car he wouldn't do anything to it till he change the plug wires first.
By the way plug wires list at $486.00, Phil can get them way lower.

Are the plug wires on these cars really that short-lived? I have never had to change the plug wires on a german car so far.
