Leaking exhaust

Hello,
I took my car for a regular lubrication service. The mechanic told me that the exhaust is leaking from the catalytic converter. That it was cracked and someone did some patch work on it. He said i'd have to replace the entire system. Just the part costs around 750 CAD. Is there an easier way around this?

750 CAD is probably a cheep aftermarket. The original for my 560SL is $4000 US the one that I put on is $450 US. It now sounds like a 1960's hot rod. I will be reconditioning the heat shields on my old one and hopefully it will sound like a Benz once again.

I have a Bosal Muffler and a DEC cat. You get what you pay for.
