Spilled h20 in gear/console:car not starting
Hi,
Hope someone can give me some advice. I have a 2000 E430 and I spilled a bottle of H20 onto the console and then it went down the gear shift area. Now the car does not start. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks Everything works on the car (windows, locking system, etc..). Could the water have caused a short in the electical system and after it dries the car will start? Any advice would be appreciated. |
After drying the area out I would go through all my fuses paying special attention to those related to the ASR switch as well as the Winter/Summer switch. Could be an interlock that won't allow start without these systems. Just a thought.

If this car has the 5-speed electronic transmission I think it does, then the control board that lives underneath the shift selector may be damaged (see this post for details)
I'm not completley sure, but that board may be tied to VIN of your car so buying a used part may not solve your problem. It's probably a dealer-only item. |
Good call smharr4. I didn't know about the electronic shift board being located under the shifters wood trim and that it can disable the car until I followed your posted link. That is what I like most about this Forum. Really makes you think before putting a super double gulp in that cup holder. I have put mine into semi retirement, very limited duty only. I may even put some plastic under the trim but over the electronics to disperse any fluid onto the carpet and not the electronics.

Thanks so much for all the information! I am sure this is what has happened. I am having it towed in for repair (thank goodness it is still under the dealers warrenty). Thanks again!

Yes, ignorance is truly sometimes bliss.

I don't have a clue how the water got there????

Do you think us dealer guys are dense?
When the shift module is removed, it will be full of what ever was spilled in there. Mercedes calls for the old parts back and checks them. If there is fluid contamination, POW!.. they reject the warranty claim. Prepare yourself to end up flipping the bill. Sometimes honesty works better than deception, because then we have wiggle room for things like goodwill and other means of coverage. Or we can make an attempt to help you out. DR.D |
Yes, doc, I was just thinking similarly. They see these things hundreds of times a week. So with this example, a manuf positions a cup holder front and center, directly in line and above the shifter. Such a mistake is costly for such a simple
error and can be up to several thousand dollars. Be it coffee, pop or water, there will be some telltale sign. |
No, I don't think Mercedes guys are stupid. Actually, just got the car 1 week ago and did not buy it from a mercedes dealer, so it is covered under the dealers 30 day warrenty. I am not dense either so I figured they would probaly be able to tell by the lake of water in there.
Thanks again for all the help, by the way the car started yesterday. |

Owned car with an extended warranty. You can have 7 years coverage total. If it is an insurance contact warranty, they will most likely send out an inspector if the amount is over $500 for the claim. Hey, If you can get someone else to pay for your slip up. Congrats! |
