W201, 190e brake pad replacement
Hi, I've searched the forum but could only find an excellent reference to W124 pad replacement. Inspecting my 190e I see that the brake calipers are quite different. The caliper appears to be in two parts, held together by two 13 mm nuts top and bottom. these bolts have small bellows on them presumably as the brakes are applied etc. I also see two 19 mm bolts top and bottom that appear to hold the caliper assembly onto the wheel itself. Do I undo the bottom bolt and simply try to swing up the caliper to get access to the pads, or do I need to remove both of these 19 mm bolts.
I did see repeated reference to 17 mm nuts..... can't see these on my '93. any help, pointers and/or information much appreciated cheers, guenter Last edited by Guenter; 02-23-2006 at 03:08 PM. |

Bolts are NOT described by the size wrench required to loosen/tighten them.
Try the rotate method first to see if it works.

You have to undo the bottom sliding bolt. 13mm. Then swing the caliper upward. Or undo the top one as well and take the whole thing off. The slides have a rubber boot and on the outside there is a bolt. If you take the whole thing do not hang the caliper by the brake line...but I am sure you knew that already
![]() There may be a nut near the rubber which you may have to hold with a wrench while you undo the outside bolts. Remember to remove your brake reservoir cap under the hood before pushing the piston back in. Last edited by yal; 02-23-2006 at 04:23 PM. |

Pay attention to proper removal and installation of the wear sensor pigtail.
Also, while folding the caliper back down make sure the anti-rattle spring ends on the pads don't get jammed in the caliper window. Changing pads is these cars is very easy once you have learned the drill. Duke |

thanks Yal and Duke, gerat help and appreciated! I take it the big 19mm nuts (top and bottom of caliper) holds on the complete caliper assembly, and I need to remove them when I also r&r the rotors next time around. Removing the 13 mm bolt removes the sliding part of the caliper (1/2 of it roughly speaking). I'm used to the W124's and, like Duke points out, the W201 will be just as fast after the first time.
cheers and thanks again Update ..... well I just changed the pads..... even easier than on the W124. I did reused the 13mm bolts, but will check after a while to see if they are holding well without new loctite on them.
