Mercedes Oil Types

Hey Guys, I have a question for everyone that I can never seem to get a proper answer for. I own a 94 C220, and I have always used 15W40 as my main motor oil. I have used this oil based on the dealerships suggestion when I purchased it, and was told all pre 2000 mercedes use 15W40. Recently in the mornings my car seems to barely fire up, and run's rough for the first few minutes, and everyone I seem to talk to is blaiming it on the 15W40 oil as being to thick.

So I want to know what type of oil everyone out here uses, and wheater the 15W40 oil reccomendation is correct. I would love suggestions on which oil type would be better for me, and what types of synthetic oil options I have. THanks.:)

Delvac 1 5w-40 or Mobil 1 0w-40. The newer gas engines really seem to like the thinner 0w40.

Just an obvseration:

If you've always used 15W40 and you just started to have problems running rough/starting I REALLY doubt it has anything to do with the oil your using. Personally, I use Mobile 1 0W40 in my 94 E320, but I know that thats not what has always been used (I purchased the car a year ago). I think for a colder climate (like B.C. in your info) a lighter weight would be a better choice (5w40, 0w40, 5w30 etc.) but its your car and your wallet.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response. 10W40 Is something I am considering. About the climate, I'm in the Vancouver area, our weather is like Seattle's, and we don't get any winter snowfall or winter freezing. Alot warmer then Minnesota. I've just been told by many people to avoid 15W40 during winter freezing, so its really left me wondering if its my oil getting slushy...or what climate I should drift away from 15W40 in, or all together abandon. Also if their's any benefits to switching to a synthetic blend? Thanks

I am in SF Bay Area, Ca. I use Valvoline Max Life 20W50. My car is 130,000 miles, Local dealer recommended.

Doesn't 20W50 cause cooling problems during the summer time?

newkid 02-26-2006 10:50 PM

Not really. I always travel to Modesto , Ca during summer. It is very warm (80 - 100 F all the time).

You can you 0w40 all year round... cold winters or hot summers. Stop monkeying around that is the oil of choice. Your car will love you for it.

trueog 02-27-2006 01:20 AM

It seems like 0W40 is a popular choice out there, as does 10W40. I'll be honest, I havn't seen it being sold at many places...perhaps since i've never kept an eye out for it. It doesn't seem like many people use 15W40...i'm starting to wonder why the dealer recommended it from day one.

With 0W40 and 10W40 what would you say is a good time for oil change intervals? With 15W40 I've always done 6-7000 km.

fpharryc 02-27-2006 02:39 AM

You seem still believe it is the oil causing the problem.

You were already told.

It is not the oil.
