Remeber how the W140 glove box had to be slammed shut? I got creative today and decided to fix it.

1) the latch mechanism:
removed the box itself to access the two screws that hold the latch in place. Loosened-up and moved the latch forward a little. Retightened the two screws.

2) the "striker" on the compartment door:
after years of slamming, this metal clip had come loose off the plastic that holds it, in fact boken. This part is accessed by unscrewing the inner face of the compartment door and looking in between. To take care of this, I drilled a small hole in the metal clip and in a matching spot in the plastic...for a small rivet. This whole part, plastic face with clip is part number 140 680 1098.

Put everything back together and it's done, closes with ease. 30 minute job, end of the slamming.

I'll try to get pictures up, which means I have to take it apart again..

Tip, if you want to really make sure the anchor piece stays there for a long time, try this. Once you have the plasic opened up (underneath the coin holder, that plastic piece) you will find two flat surfaces (plastic to metal). Drill a small hole through both (alligned) and pop in a rivet.

Of course, you could always just read the part number off that plasic cover and just order a whole new one...but that's cheating, and what else will you do with the 30 minutes you save.

The lock in my C class glove box lid broke down a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't close the lid anymore (I saw the light when driving in the dark!). I took the lid apart and had to buy the complete inner part of the lid (approx 30US$) because one eye of a 10mm short spring broke off and couldn't be replaced because mercedes glued the tiny lock to the inner side of the glove box lid!
...nice engineering...
