Can someone give me full description (technical and specification) of the speed limiter used in the Mercedes cars. I am doing a research paper on this topic and need some detailed information on it. Preferably the information should include the mechanical and electronic control details.

Thanks

Try doing a search on Speed Limiter. That would be a start.

im no tech but i know its an rpm limiter on my car that controls the top speed. it simpily cuts the fuel supply when the maximum RPM is reached.

Thank you for your reply. But could anyone suggest any ways of gettin these details from Mercedes themselves. I mean the complete spec of it. I could not find a way to contact them directly. Thanks

The max. rpm is on the fuel relay. You can't cut the limiter unless you can manipulate the fuel relay. It is listed on top where it says 8 zyl next to or on the package itself.

Do you mean the maximum speed limiter or the driver variable speed limiting function which operates as part of the cruise control/automatic transmission on all post-'99 models?

try 1-800-FOR-Mercedes (I think thats the number).

That is the number for Mercedes Benz USA. Perhaps they will be able to fax you what you need, or direct you to where you need to go.

If you havent already searched, try searching for performance chip as well, maybe one of the chip programmers, like PAD, or Superchips can enlighten you as they can reprogram the car and remove the Limiter.

Both would be beneficial, either the maximum speed limiter or the driver variable speed limiting function. However, the driver variable speed limiter is the one I am interested more.

I know how to operate the driver variable speed limiter, but how it works is a different question! The device is part of the cruise control system which itself is linked to the automatic transmission or its software at least. These devices are available on a great many new cars and are probably bought in from a supplier such as Bosch or Continental, like the ASR and ESP systems. Try the former's website, often there is quite extensive technical information available.

You may also wish to consider the distronic system fitted to the new S-Class and CL cars. This is a cruise control system which maintains a constant distance from traffic ahead by cutting engine power and even applying up to 1/3 of maximum braking power. This too is a bought in system as it is available on Jaguar's XKR.

If you have a Mercedes, maybe your dealer/service technician would be happy to talk to you. I wonder what the MB maintenance CD-roms available on this website would tell you.
