Wheel Speed Sensor
How do I go about checking the wheel speed sensor on my 1996 SL600. I am having problems with the overbuilt ADS, and am looking to see if I can fin the problems with a 3$ can of brakleen and not a $500 sensor.
You help is greatly appreciated. |
I'm pretty sure an OBDII reader can read the speed sensors of each individual wheel when the car is driving down the road.

What is the location of the sensor?? I am getting the ADS light, and need to fix.

You can check the wave form of each wheel sensor on a lab scope. Should be sharp with even amplitude....a drop out, or missing wave due to brake rotor dust bridging the tone wheel will make the system over react or go into default and put the dash warning lamp on.
FWIW...A very loose wheel bearing will do same. . |
I was told I can clean the sunsor by cleaning it with brake cleaner. I have no idea where the sensor is actually located, so I am really in the dark. I will just go out, and spray the whole hub assembly with brakleen until its all shiney again. I hope when I have the wheel off, I can find out what is wrong with it.

If it's like my car, the tone wheel is the serrations on the bearing hub unit outside surface. Just degrease it and clean the remaining grit with a wire brush. The sensor is the stationary magnetic pickup almost touching the tone wheel with a couple of wires going from it.
