Side Gapping -- Any comments ???

Hi all,

I have heard of this before. I was just wondering what you all thought about the subject. It makes sense. Exposing the spark instead of covering it.

Check out the site and see what they say. If the only draw back is having to regap and replace more often, then that is really not a major issue.

Okay, here are my biased thoughts.

I believe that spark plugs are susceptible to all sorts of marketing hype because anyone can buy them and change them. Occasionally you may get an almost immeasurable gain from a particular plug configuration in a particular combustion chamber. If there is a measurable gain, in most cases I believe it is due to the fact that you just put in new plugs, not because of the configuration.

The side gap may work better in some particular combustion chambers and poorly in others.

These days, with the flame thrower ignition systems that we have, your safest bet is to screw in a set of factory recommended plugs, gapped to factory specs, or in some cases SLIGHTLY opened up, and leave the gimmicks for others.

My $0.02,

This type of gapping is used for racing only and will not give any noticeable gain in your MB. Only thing you will notice is you are replacing your plugs twice as often.
