Transmission Noise

93 500 SEL 140000 MILES

When transmission is placed in reverse -normal sounds- when car moves backwards-a strange sound is heard. It starts as a clicking noise and changes to a GRRRRRRRR as the car proceeds in reverse. The clicking noise only happens when the transmission fluid is cold. The GRRRRR sound is heard any time the car is moving in reverse.

Any ideas?????

Thank you

When you select reverse, do you feel/ have any delay going into reverse.

Does the "speed" of the sound change with how fast you are backing up?
My 400 did the same thing before a little while before reverse went AWOL. The noise was more pronounced when the tranny was cold, but it could still be heard when it was warm. Mine was due to the failure of a retaining ring that holds several springs that disengage the reverse clutches when it is taken out of that gear.
The bad news is that it meant I had to pull the trans out and rebuild it.
The good news is that my car will now have a rebuilt transmission.
You may have the same problem, or you might not.
