95 E320 Coupe - Timing Chain Press tool

I will be changing the timing chain on my 95 E320 coupe (M104 engine).

Performance Products has a rental chain link press tool to peen over the master link rivets - but they indicate it will only fit the double link chains for the 116, 123 and 126 models. Does anyone know if this tool would also work on my 95 coupe's IWIS chain (W124)?

Tool rents for about $37 for up to 3 weeks with a $187 refundable deposit.

Thanks for any info you can provide

What is the issue with using the clips that come with the new chain? That's pretty much the standard way to do it.

The master link that came w/replacement chain is the type that requires peening. I have read many posts that show a strong preference for using the peened style master link over the master link that uses clips. I prefer to go with the peened style since it is a more robust link - but need to rent the tool that flattens the rivet heads on the link.

I'm just curious...why are you changing the chain in the first place? How many miles are on this engine?

I thought that the m104 chain was pretty much good for life (200k+)

Engine has about 190K on it. I have friend who is a mechanic at a MB dealership. He helped me replace my head gasket - and while doing the job he inspected the timing chain and felt that the chain should also be replaced with a new one.

He's worked on loads of M104 engines and if he says I should change it I respect his judgement.

I suppose at 190K with the head off its as good of a time as any to replace the chain. I can't imagine the part is too expensive either. So for another 190k you should be good to go

Thanks for the info.

crimper tool.

You can rent the crimper through this websites rental program.I think it is only $10 to rent. You may have to wait in line.Just check the tool rental thread for more info. It comes with the adapter for both chains. there is a way to upgrade to the double row chain. it may be complicated.
