Tranny Question 4 friend

My friend has a 1992 400E with 150K miles. His tranny just stopped working! Yup that's right, just stopped working. It was fine, and he parked it in his driveway. Three days later he started it and put it in gear and it wouldn't go anywhere. No problems or anything out of the norm before that. Car is regularly serviced. What could have happened? It was driving perfectly when he parked it and just would not run that day when he started it.
Thanks

I would first, make sure the shifter is actually shifting the tranny. Maybe the cable/linkage has come off the tranny or shifter end. I would also check the fluid level.

Thanks, I tell him to chech that. In the mean time I would also love to hear from other masters here. Thanks a bunch

If the car moves in reverse only, no forward gears, B2 problem. No movement in any gear, check the shift linkage, if it’s working, then it’s a front pump failure.

What's a front pump failure? It is expensive to fix?

Al Magaloff 03-11-2006 09:46 PM

The pump is what makes the hydraulic pressure automatic trannys operate on. Yes, major.

To confirm a front pump failure, install a pressure gauge in the main/ working pressure port, located on the passenger, middle of the transmission, 12mm bolt. The reading on a good pump should be 75 to 90PSI in drive at an idle. A reading of “0” bad pump

Any more thoughts?

Check the fluid level, any noise when selecting any gear; The symptoms are no movement in ANY GEAR, right?

Thanks but if it does turn out to be a pump failure then can a new pump be placed in it and what is the approximate labor for that. I think that the front pump is around $350. If it is a linkage problem, then how much labor and parts?
Thanks

If it's a pump failure, and the metal debris went through the tranny, then it could be as much as rebuild the tranny. The linkage thing could be simple. I would find out what is wrong, before I worried how much.
