Please help me ID this loose hose!
So I put in new glow plugs today and that seemed to go pretty well, but when I was done I noticed I had a loose hose. I'm really not sure what this is for exactly and it's unclear to me where it goes. I'm thinking it has something to do with fuel or the vaccum system as it is a clear hose. It seems to originate from somewhere near the firewall on the driver's side, but it was getting dark and I couldn't completely track down the origin.
I also removed the instrument cluster a couple of days ago so I wonder if I could have pulled this hose loose while pulling the still-attached instruments toward me...on the other hand, it seems very plausible that I might have knocked it with my hand or a wrench while removing/installing the glow plugs. I did find one possible place where it looked like the hose could go, but I'm not entirely sure any hose connects there. It's a thin-nozzle type thing a little ways beneath a red plastic cap that is next to the engine, on the passenger side. It is toward the firewall. I don't know what purpose this red cap serves. I know written descriptions of these sorts of things are difficult to grasp, but I am so far unable to get my pics to a file size where I can upload them here. We've tried zipping and trying to make them this or that file type but we can't get anywhere near 65 kb. Any tips in this regard? I can try taking some really low res pics tomorrow, but I guess I'll post this now in the hope that one of you out there has had this exact same issue before. Thanks for your help if you can give me any!

that would be your turbo boost line which runs from the back of the manifold to the overboost protection valve on the firewall. you need to reconnect it. that 'red' thingy would be the top cap of your trans fluid dipstick.
for further info on the boost line you can search the diesel forum for 'banjo bolt' and 'alda' . plenty of reading there.

Thank You!!
After about ten minutes of researching the boost line I'm sure you're right. But I'm still not sure if that little nozzle I saw is the connection point or the boost pressure switch I read about. It's covered in oil if that gives any indication. I will do some more research on the turbo, banjo bolt etc. and will hopefully figure out exactly where the connection point is. Thanks again.

the pressure switch is on top of the manifold and a lot bigger. i think you will notice a performance difference when you reconnect that line!

Ok the banjo bolt...well I knew what I had to do but I didn't realize that little thing was actually the much-discussed banjo bolt...
I will definitely clean it; I have some carburator cleaner that should do that nicely. I don't know if I will see a performance increase or not, because I'm pretty sure it was connected the last time I drove it; I must have knocked it off while changing glow plugs. It is pretty dirty, though, so maybe this is a blessing in disguise. The power was always better than I expected but my car is the only 300D I've ever driven, so what do I know? Isn't there a fitting on the line that connects to the banjo bolt? Am I going to have to order something from somewhere or will a local hardware shop have all the parts I need? Or do people just melt the line onto the bolt as you suggested? I'm pretty sure I've read somethign on here about a fitting for the line.
