under $100 tool kit for beginner DIY
Hi,
While looking for some tools for my blower replacement project in Sears. One individual said he used these tools: T15 Torx driver, 4.5 mm hex wrench, 10mm socket + ratchet. I came across this set and purchased it (seemed like a good price even if it had some non metric tools). http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00933129000&tab=des#tab http://www.sears.com/download/misc/Parts_33129.pdf Should i keep this set and add more metric tools, or is there some other toolset i should get to get me started? (the plan is to initially :) work with the easy -time consuming- tasks, like the AC. Just yesterday I ordered the E-class Bible and the MBZ Technical companion to get me started. Thanks |
My beginning set was like this (Sears Craftsman), and then I built around it.
Some specialty tools, other small add-on sets (sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.). You already bought it, so stick with it. $70 is a heck of a price. |
For the beginner buy Craftsman, you can't go wrong. A lot of the cheap stuff out their is junk frankly, you do get what you pay for in regards to tools.
I'd start with a nice set of metric open ended wrench's. A nice assortment of sockets, with extensions. You want them in at least 3/8 and 1/2 drive. Get a cheater bar as well. Throw in a set of screw drivers and a few different types of pliers, and you are off to a good start. |
Craftsman tools are by far the best bang for the buck. Snap On prices are out of this world even used on ebay. I did get a nice Snap On torque wrench that is a joy to use but I got a good price and could probably sell it for same should I no longer need it. Incredibly cheap prices on brand new Craftsman tools on ebay. I did splurge on some nice SK ratchets but again, only at discounted ebay prices.

There is a lot of stuff at Harbor Freight that is worth having (and some that is not).
Sears tools can be a bargain, but buy only during their (frequent) sales on particular items. |
On a very restricted budget, I'd get at least a 1/2" torque wrench from Harbor Freight. It might not be the best, but it is certainly better than nothing, and infrequent mechanics (such as myself) have little or no feel for the right torque. With all the aluminum components on these engines, torque is imporant as you can do more damage from overtightening than from undertightening.
