1992 500SL opinions.

Didn't get any responses on the SL forum, I'll try here

Found a 1992 500SL in good condition from the pics i've seen.
$8,000.00 , 200,000 miles what is the lifespan of the top end on a 500sl
I know the bootm end last forever. What about wiring harnesses like the 300E I had and wiring problems that the wires covers burn up and desintegrate.

Thanks for your opinions.

I don't believe the M119 engine wasn't plagued with the dreaded wiring harness problem. I had a 95 500SL and there was no issue with it.

200K is a LOT of miles, and while the engine is one of the most reliable, at that mileage, I would be most concerned about the condition of the timing chain. The frequency of the fluid changes most likely dictates how sound the radiator, water pump, and heads are.

Rubber suspension components will need attention as well.

Hydraulic top components, specifically, the front locking cylinders may need attention...they leak to let you know.

Climate control work okay?

Some things can be fixed cheaply on this model, but major components are REALLY expensive. My major concern in this case would be age related wear and tear. Even tires for this car could run you close to $1000.

I know $8K sounds like a steal, but you could easily spend that on repairs if the car was improperly maintained...

thank you GBENZ for your reply, that's what concerns me, it sounds like a good deal but you know how good deals are most of the time.

It's wise to be wary of nurses with sales territories. Nuns too.

Hey Deanyel,
