need advice on a little issue.

I am looking into buy a very very clean 1989 300sel with very high mileage! Car is mechanically perfect and has every service history avaliable. Car has a slight issue in the carfax. Car has never been in any accidents and has consistent mileage history but has an "exceeds mechanical limits" title. Car has 287k miles. Owner never told me anything about this but the car is clean, and checks out. no rust or body damage Should i buy this car? apparenty, as carfax reports, this car has a "exceeds mechanical limitis" title which was issued at 25k miles in 1993. I dont understand how this car can get this title at that mileage. I also used autocheck and info is the same as carfax. I dont know why this was done. According to carfax, you only get this title if you only have a 5 digit odometer when the odo turns from 99,999 to 00,000 all over again.

Answer:

Some states only accept 100K or less, any more = over mechanical limits title.
Regardless of equipment on vehicle.

Have a great day.

Good answer on the odo thing , I never realized that .

Here in California when my MB was inspected at the DMV
I was asked the mileage, I stated it was 128,000 miles.

The inspector said "so its turned over , right ?".
I said - "No, is says 128,000, not 28,000. It has a 6 digit odometer
that goes to 999,999."
The inspector replies - "Okay, so its turned over."
Me: *SIGH* - yeah, turned over.

In South Carolina, if the cluster is repaired/changed for ANY reason = automatic over mechanical limits on title = the service would have been done at a dealer = the dealer would never risk their business license by failing to report the repair/change to the state.

interesting, well mileage for the car is consistent and such and no roll back detected. I am going to ask the owner about this issue

so the title

was issued when the car was three years old, right? and it stated 25k. exactly?

so perhaps it was not working and replaced then. question is how many miles did it have at the time? my guess is not much more than 25k.

so now it has what, 287? so it might be more than that. so what? at 287 all reductions in price have been taken, probably. and you are then buying completely on condition. and at that mileage the price is probably fairly low, right?

so if you think it is a good car, i wouldnt get too concerned about the mileage. still i would ask the seller about it just to see if he has a true sounding answer.

good luck.
