transmission seal

What is the procedure for installing a new front transmission seal (with pump o-ring) ? I have a used trans on its way and wanted to put in a new front seal while I had it out. It looks as though you might have to remove the front pump, etc., etc. and it might no be worth it. The car is a 1988 300 E.
