Q about switching VIN #
Say if u have an old rusty car, somehow u found a car with no reg, decided to switch VIN #. Is it illegal? Or keep your damn mouth shut.
TIA |
In addition to state and local laws, tampering or misrepresenting the VIN is a federal offense, with a maximum 5 year imprisonment. 18 USC sec. 511(a)
|
So don't screw with it. Don't switch license plates either.

Yeah, definitely a no-no...

Why would you want to do this unless you are trying to cover up something under the history of the old VIN, which is why it is illegal.
